EC all set to update electoral roll from local units

Jul 18, 2017-

Bowing down to increasing pressure from the political parties, the Election Commission (EC) has decided to ease the voter registration process by collecting the names of eligible voters at their respective Rural Municipality and Municipality.

The EC will send its teams to local levels to update the electoral roll, EC spokesperson Surya Prasad Sharma said in a statement on Tuesday.  The EC has also made arrangements for registration in the voter roll from outside districts.

In view of the upcoming provincial and federal elections, the EC had begun registration of eligible voters from its regional/district election offices located in all 75 districts from July 16. Earlier, the registration period was fixed for only 15 days. With the revision of the decision today, voter registration will be carried at local units—Rural Municipalities and Municipalities—from July 31-August 16.

However, the voter registration at regional and district election offices, which was earlier fixed for 15 days, will be continued until the dates for the next elections are finalised, the EC said in its statement. According to the constitutional provision, the voter registration should be stopped once the election dates are announced.

The EC changed its decision which allowed for registration of voters only at its district or regional offices following the pressure from the ruling and opposition parties. The parties had argued that the EC decision has compelled the voters to reach district headquarters in order to get their names registered in the voter roll.

Likewise, the EC has decided to implement the Out District Registration (ODR) programme at EC’s regional and district offices until the dates for elections are finalised.
